A Belton teenager will be following in the footsteps of David Beckham as he heads to America to play football - after five universities chased his signature.

Peter Beresford will be jetting off Stateside in the summer after impressing in a gruelling scholarship programme which included an assessment day and interview, exams and a football skills showcase.

It came after the 18-year-old ex-South Axholme Academy pupil took part in an exchange programme to Nebraska with North Lindsey College. Having enjoyed the experience so much, Beresford began researching into scholarships.

And with a handful of universities after him, former Isle United and Epworth Colts star Beresford opted for Briar Cliff University in Iowa to play football and study business.

He said: “I am so excited about studying in America and playing for the university team.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of managing my studies and developing my football skills even further.

“I am so grateful to North Lindsey College for giving me the opportunity to take part in the exchange. It opened my eyes to the opportunities that are out there and really has changed my life.

“I’m particularly grateful to my tutor, Jayne Fenwick, who was so supportive throughout my course and really is just a great tutor. I would also like to thank Scott Barlow from South Axholme Academy who was a great football coach and totally believed in me.”

He added: “I just want to get out to America and begin the next stage of my life.”
