Doncaster Rovers: Dickov’s men hold the cards to decide their survival fate

Rovers’ have all that they could have wished for heading into the decisive final day of the season – their destiny in their own hands.

Victory at the King Power Stadium on Saturday lunchtime will guarantee their place in the Championship next season, regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Birmingham’s 1-0 defeat against Wigan on Tuesday night ensured it is they who head into the final day sitting in the single remaining relegation place.

As long as Rovers match or better Birmingham’s result from their trip to Bolton, they will survive.

A draw for Paul Dickov’s men could bring Millwall into the relegation reckoning.

If the Lions were to lose by two clear goals in their home clash with Bournemouth, a point would be enough for Rovers to move above them in the standings.

Blackpool are the only other club remaining in relegation danger, though their chances of dropping seem unlikely.

Should the Tangerines lose at home to Charlton, it would take wins for Rovers, Birmingham and Millwall to send them down. Or a defeat by four clear goals for Blackpool would mean Millwall only needed a point to move above them.

If Rovers were to lose at Leicester and Birmingham draw, Dickov’s men would be relegated due to vastly inferior goal difference.

Rovers’ nervy afternoon is set to play out at Leicester’s title-winning party this weekend.

Nigel Pearson’s men could become only the 11th club in history to reach the 100 point mark in a season, if they were to pick up at least a point against Rovers.

The game will also be the last for striker Kevin Phillips before his retirement and the legendary former Sunderland man has already spoken of his desire of marking the day with one final goal.

Key final day fixtures (all 12.15pm kick off): Leicester City v Doncaster Rovers; Bolton Wanderers v Birmingham City; Millwall v AFC Bournemouth; Blackpool v Charlton Athletic.
