Doncaster’s newest professional golfer has made the cut at the PGA EuroPro Tour Qualifying School.

Guy Winstanley, from Stainforth, will compete in the final stage of qualifying at Frilford Heath this week after carding rounds of 81 and 77 at Slaley Hall in Northumberland.

He will be one of 185 players competing for a coveted EuroPro Tour card.

Nineteen-year-old Winstanley, a member at Wheatley Golf Club, had a handicap of 21 at the tender age of eight and is a former Yorkshire junior champion.

On recently turning pro, Winstanley said: “I am over the moon. Golf has been a major part of my life since I can remember and I always dreamt of becoming the next Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy.

“To be a golfing professional means that I can now battle it out against the country’s best and hopefully bring some silverware back to Doncaster.

“My most rewarding win to date was in the Yorkshire U16 Championships where I won by just one shot,” he added.

“It will always be one of my favourite accomplishments as it was on my home course in front of the people at Wheatley Golf Club that have coached me and guided me to be the golfer I am today.

“Everyone at Thorne and Town Moor Golf Clubs, staff at Balby Academy and finally the team at Barnby Dun Golf Range have also supported me in the early days so I would like to thank them too.”
