Ray to shine on at the Dons

Dons’ stalwart Ray Green will continue to work for the club – at least for the immediate future.

A popular figure with Doncaster fans, Ray accepted an offer to work as the club’s match day manager and will be in charge in their first home league game of the 2014 campaign against Keighley on Sunday.

How long he remains in the post could depend of how his new part-time role as lottery manager with Championship rivals Featherstone Rovers evolves.

“Things might change in the future, and Featherstone might want me involved on match days, but they have no problem with me working for the Dons,” said Ray, who hopes the post could become full-time were he to be successful.

Ray was the Dons commercial manager prior to the club being taken over by Doncaster Rovers late last year.

Although disappointed to lose his job at a club where he had previously held down a number of top posts over the years including vice-chairman and chief executive as well as several coaching roles, Ray bears no grudges.

“It is just one of those things; there are always changes when there is any sort of takeover or amalgamation,” he said. “I honestly believe that everyone at the club had done a good job over the past four years.

“But I think owner Carl Hall knew he’d taken the club as far as he could and if we wanted to go to the next level things had to change. I think the Club Doncaster project is the right way to go forward.

“You’ve got to give a big rap to Carl because he not only saved the club, but steered it to sixth place in the Championship last season after being promoted as champions.

“It’s good that Carl (chief executive), and chairman John Scarrow, are still involved.

“Hopefully the club can build on last year’s success. We are in with Doncaster Rovers now and we’ve got a good young coach in Paul Cooke.

“I’ve worked with Paul since he’s been here and he’s such an honest, straightforward guy. He’ll work his socks off to bring success to the club and he’ll bring 100 per cent professionalism to the job.”
