February saw us compete in the Humber Schools Games with plenty of success, writes The Axholme Academy’s Emma Downs.

The Games are made up of teams who have become the champions in their sport in the local area and they go on to represent their country in the Humberside competition.

We were very fortunate and represented the county of North Lincolnshire in three separate sports across the same number different days.

Monday saw our KS3 girls represent North Lincolnshire in basketball at Sirius Academy in Hull.

The team was comprised of all year nine girls who had previously won the North Lincolnshire schools competition.

The girls played two matches - winning both. They beat schools representing East Riding and North East Lincolnshire.

This meant that they secured a place in the final where they would play against Kelvin Hall School who were representing Hull.

This was a hard-fought match by both teams and Hull came out the victor, winning 12-6.

The girls did extremely well and were declared runners-up in the Humberside competition.

Then four KS3 girls travelled to the Hull Badminton Centre to take part in the badminton tournament.

Georgia Green, Sinead Bramhill, Lauren Hall and Courtney Wills had also been in the Basketball team.

The girls’ first match was against Tollbar Academy, representing North East Lincolnshire, where they managed to secure a 4-1 win.

Their second win, 5-0, was against Beverley High School who were representing East Riding.

This meant their final match was against Hymers College, representing Hull.

Both teams had won all of their matches so it was a tough final tie.

The girls put up a tough fight but came out as runners-up.

The next day 11 pupils arrived at St Marys College in Hull to participate in the table tennis tournament.

We were representing North Lincolnshire in various different age categories; one pupil in the U16 Boys, three in the U16 Girls, three in the U13 Boys and four in the U13 Girls.

Two of the pupils, Georgia and Sinead, had represented the school at the previous two competitions too.

The standard of the competition was extremely high, particularly with England’s number one representing Hull in the U13 Boys category.

Our best result of the day was Georgia Green placing fourth out of 12 in the U12 Girls event.

And, even after all of the sport in one week, we were back out on the sports pitch - this time with our year nine girls competing in the U14 indoor hockey tournament at Brumby.

Eight teams entered in total so we were placed into two leagues.

The girls managed to beat Frederick Gough School, The Vale Academy and Baysgarth School in all of their league matches, which meant that we faced South Axholme Academy in the final.

We were keen to add another North Lincolnshire victory to the rest so the girls went out determined to win.

They did an absolutely fantastic job and managed to beat South Axholme 2-0 in the final, meaning they became North Lincolnshire Schools Indoor Hockey Champions.
