Scunthorpe RUFC’s under-13s were guilty of giving away a vital lead against Selby, writes Oliver Beniston.
Hosting their North Yorkshire opponents at Heslam Park, Scunthorpe took an early lead when No8 Matthew West crashed over.
Jack Lifsey could not find the conversion kick as the youngsters led 5-0.
Despite further good play from Scunthorpe and metres made, it was in fact Selby who scored next.
It came following a break down the wing as they went over to equalise.
However, Selby suffered the same fate as Scunthorpe as they were unable to add the extras and the scoreboard remained 5-5.
Even with the setback, Scunthorpe kept up their spirits and regained their lead following a fabulous try from second rower Adam King.
This time, Scunthorpe’s No10 Lifsey was able to secure the extra two conversion points to put them 12-5 up.
With the half time whistle looming, Selby scored their second try of the match.
A missed conversion saw both teams go into the interval with Scunthorpe leading 12-10.
Moments after the interval, Selby secured another score to see them go ahead for the first time in the game, without conversion, for 15-12.
A spirited Scunthorpe outfit attempted to get back into tie as they moved the ball upfield, however, their display was without scoring success as Selby put the ball behind the line for their fourth try.
The conversion saw the Yorkshire side go 22-12 up.
At that point, Scunthorpe’s hopes of a comeback were in vain as Selby crashed over for more scores as they ran out 33-12 winners.
