Thornensians kept on the pace in Yorkshire Three when they secured a hard-fought 33-13 home win over a competitive Rotherham Phoenix.

Thorne got off to a storming start with a strong wind in their favour in the first half, going 21-0 ahead at half time with three converted tries.

Goal kicker Konrad Hanson had an excellent game and was on target with all three kicks as No 8 Ryan Pilley crashed over for two tries and winger Brett Hunt raced in for the other.

A try early in the second half by replacement second row Greg Linsdell was not converted, and Rotherham then brought the score back to 26-13 with two unconverted tries and a penalty goal.

But Thorne regained the upper hand and sealed their win when scrum-half Lee Linsdell, brother of Greg, sprinted in for a fifth try and Hanson kicked a terrific conversion into the wind and from far out on the wing.

The win put fifth placed Thorne three points above their rivals with a game in hand. They travel to bottom of the table Skipton on Saturday.

Rossington Hornets were left without a match when their scheduled Yorkshire Five game at Knaresborough was postponed.
