Doncaster RLFC: Super League’s in sight but top eight finish is priority - Hall

The door to the Super League is wide open for the Dons but Carl Hall insists the club must not lose sight of their target for 2014 - a top eight finish in this season’s Championship.

Hall greeted the decision to ditch the current licensing system in favour of a return to promotion and relegation as “brilliant news for Doncaster”.

Dons’ general manager is also predicting a bright future for the club. And with the RFL’s proposals to split the top two divisions into three play-off groups of eight now agreed, Doncaster could get their first crack at reaching the Super League as soon as next year.

However, Hall says they must not get ahead of themselves.

“We can’t lose sight of the fact we’ve got a job to do this year,” he said.

“The plan is to finish in the top eight and make one hundred per cent sure we’re in the Championship come 2015.

“What we don’t want is to end up in ninth or tenth and face the possibility of a play-off.

“It’s fantastic news for Doncaster [that promotion to the Super League will become a possibility],” he added.

“We’re all incredibly excited about the future. I’m convinced there’s some very, very good times ahead of us.”

The new league structure will see the Super League and Championship each cut to 12 teams in 2015. Those divisions will then split into three play-off groups of eight two thirds of the way through the season.

That means if Doncaster finish in the top four of next year’s Championship they will get a crack at the bottom four sides in Super League for a place in the top flight in 2016.
