John Muldowney will not let Adwick-le-Street Cricket Club go to the wall even if he is the last man standing.
But the long serving chairman has hit out at the lack of financial support available for his team and for village cricket in general.
And he claims it is only a matter of time before the town’s smaller clubs start going under.
“Adwick Cricket Club will survive,” said the 59-year-old.
“But we are dying - and village cricket in Doncaster is dying as a whole.
“We won’t let this club go under.
“For it to fold while I’m still alive would be heart breaking. It’s been my passion for as long as I can remember.
“But Adwick Park is probably one of the worst facilities for the league we’re in. There’s nothing here, just a rickety portakabin. It’s embarrassing to be honest, an eye-sore.
“We seem to have been left behind by everyone.
“We formed a Sports Association seven or eight years ago but it’s been broken promise after broken promise in terms of trying to get funding.
“We’re a family club. We provide entertainment for local people in the village but we’re just not getting any help,” he added.
“Where is the Olympic legacy?”
Muldowney’s frustration has been tempered by the approval of a £2.5 million investment in nearby Adwick Leisure Centre.
“I just cannot understand the £2.5m grant for Adwick Leisure Centre,” said John.
“A mere fraction of that - £100,000 - would do so much for this club.
“We’d at least be able to provide some decent changing rooms and showers for the lads that play cricket and football here.
“The facilities here are a major problem.
“There’s nothing to entice players to Adwick and I cannot understand why it is like that.
“This is part of a bigger problem really because village clubs are dying a death in Doncaster.
“If we’re not careful we’ll just end up with the bigger clubs, the likes of Doncaster Town, Tickhill and Brodsworth.
“We’ve just formed a new junior team and we’ll stick to our policy of bringing younger players through,” he added.
“But it’s really hard work and it’d be nice to get a bit of support.
“It’s not just about sport either. With a bit of funding we could have something here for the whole community, somewhere for mothers and toddlers to visit, somewhere to have a coffee.
“But whatever we’ve tried we’ve come up against an obstacle.”
