Danum Academy are planning on serving up even more success after scooping a prestigious award from the Lawn Tennis Association.
The Doncaster school’s growing commitment to the sport, and achievements on court, saw them named 2013 LTA Tennis School of the Year.
But Danum are not about to rest on their laurels, with plans afoot to improve their own tennis facilities and develop the sport further in the local community.
Dave Richardson, Danum’s head of PE, said: “We have formed a strong partnership with Wheatley Hills Tennis Club which involves them using our facilities and us using their expertise, such as coaching and support for fixtures.
“This is continuing to grow and at the moment we are looking to develop tennis facilities on site at the school in partnership with the club.
“Hopefully this will include floodlights and a clubhouse in the not so distant future.
“We’re also looking to the future and making plans to develop tennis further in our community.”
Danum’s sixth form boys were a smash hit last year after reaching the finals of the Aegon Team Tennis Schools National Championships for the first time.
The school’s Year 7/8 and 9/10 girls also reached the quarter finals for the north of England after beating several independent fee paying schools in the earlier rounds.
“The number of students participating in tennis has increased dramatically and school clubs, again in partnership with coaches from Wheatley Hills, now run through the whole year including indoor mini tennis,” said Mr Richardson.
“This is a huge change from the usual six-week block in the summer when the ‘Wimbledon effect’ takes over,
“We are now finding students play more regularly and are developing as players quicker.”
Danum were presented with their award by LTA deputy president Cathie Sabin.
