Doncaster Rovers: January cull is not over yet - Dickov

Paul Dickov has warned his squad to “put up or shut up” - because his January cull may not be over yet.

Dickov has kept his post-Stevenage promise of showing several players the door.

Dave Syers yesterday completed his move to Scunthorpe, while Billy Paynter joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season.

James Harper has also been released, while loanees Reece Wabara, Yun Suk-Young and Federico Macheda also returned to their parent clubs at the end of December.

Dickov stepped up talks with a proven striker ahead of today’s trip to Blackburn, and also wants to sign another defender, but Rovers’ boss has warned there may still be more departures.

“There’s a large group of them that have had their chance, probably with the exception of Marc [De Val Fernandez] and Kyle Bennett,” said Dickov.

“So it’s time for them to put up or shut up.

“The board have been great with me but I’ve got to show goodwill on my behalf too,” he added.

“If we’re going to look to get players in - particularly the sort of players I want to bring in - then we’ve got to look to get a few out.

“The board have given me money to get Richie [Wellens} and Abdou [Meite], we’re looking at a centre forward, and then after that it’s my job to try and get a few out.

“It’s not all take, take, take with me. I’m the manager and I have to balance the books.”
