Richie Wellens has put an end to speculation by agreeing a new 18-month deal with Rovers.

The influential midfielder had been a free agent since New Year’s Day after the end of his short term deal at the Keepmoat.

Despite links with promotion-chasing Championship outfits such as Queens Park Rangers and Derby County, Wellens has opted to stay with Rovers.

Rovers chief executive Gavin Baldwin said: “The owners and manager have worked incredibly hard to ensure we manage to keep Richie at the club long term.

“This is great news for everyone involved and a clear signal of the owners’ intent for the future of Doncaster Rovers.”

Over the past month, Rovers boss Paul Dickov repeatedly asserted that Wellens was keen to sign a new deal.

Baldwin revealed earlier this week that Wellens had been offered ‘a deal beyond our usual parameters’ based on his performances for the club this season.

Baldwin added: “It’s fair to say that the length of the contract could be considered long term for a player of his age and beyond the usual length we offer to a player over 32.”

The 33-year-old has arguably been Rovers’ key man this season, displaying incredible composure in the heart of midfield.
