Paul Dickov insists that sought-after midfielder Dave Syers has a future with the Championship side despite reported interest from other clubs.

Bradford City are said to be the latest club keen on securing the services of the Rovers playmaker since his return from a loan spell with Scunthorpe United.

The Iron are also expected to make a bid for Syers during the transfer window.

The 26-year-old was enjoying a successful spell with United before being recalled by parent club Doncaster for their FA Cup third round tie with Stevenage.

Despite Dickov describing the 3-2 defeat as an ‘inept’ team performance, one of the few positives to come out of the game was Syers playing for the full 90 minutes.

And watching the game from the Keepmoat Stadium stands was former Rovers shot-stopper and current Bradford City goalkeeping coach Lee Butler.

Syers began his footballing journey with the Bantams as a trainee before moving to Doncaster in July 2012.

With Richie Wellens yet to secure a long-term deal with Rovers, Syers looks likely to be the person to fill the void in Dickov’s midfield.

Following the 3-2 loss on Saturday against Stevenage, Dickov said his returning midfielder had ‘done okay’ during the match.

Asked if Syers had a future with Doncaster, the Scotsman responded: “Of course he has.”

On his performance, the Scot added: “He’s come back in from a place were he’s done well and scored goals and that’s why we brought him back.”

However, the former Oldham Athletic boss may have to fend off a few phone calls with Scunthorpe arguably the front-runners in trying to acquire Syers’ services after he netted five goals in 15 appearances for the League Two table-toppers.

Meanwhile, Dickov’s unprecedented injury list could see a bit of relief after James Coppinger was deemed fit enough to play in yesterday’s behind-closed-doors practice match.

Abdoulaye Meite also featured in the game with the Ivory Coast and ex-West Brom defender hoping to secure a deal with the Championship outfit.
