Thorne Colliery beat both the weather and Clay Cross Town to book themselves a place in the quarter-finals of the Central Midlands League’s Challenge Cup.

Colliery posted a 3-0 win over their fellow Northern Division rivals on a day when just nine CML fixtures survived the wet weather.

Leading scorer Ross Ebbage, Johnny Lugton and Robert Simpson shared the Doncaster side’s goals in a comfortable win.

The current top two Northern Division sides, AFC Mansfield and Westella Hanson, also made progress after being made to work hard for their respective one-goal wins.

Bentley Colliery’s clash at Thoresby Colliery was one of just two Northern Division games to go ahead.

Unfortunately for the Doncaster side, who ended the year in very good form, they were unable to get 2014 off on the right footing and lost 3-1.

Jake Walker, Nathan Brown and Tony Buchanan were the Thoresby marksmen with Billy Parkhouse claiming the Colliery consolation.

Among the Northern Division games to fall victim to a waterlogged pitch was Brodsworth Colliery’s match at Welbeck and Askern’s clash at Newark Town.
