Doncaster Rovers: Syers not short of suitors as he bids to impress Dickov

David Syers is back at Doncaster Rovers with a point to prove.

But the 26-year-old - recalled from his loan spell with Scunthorpe United yesterday - will not be short of options if he fails to convince Paul Dickov of his value.

The Iron are likely to test Doncaster’s resolve to hold onto Syers with a January bid for the goal-getting midfielder.

And several other lower league sides, including his former club Bradford City, are thought to be monitoring his situation following a productive loan spell at Glanford Park.

Syers, who scored five goals in 15 appearances for Scunthorpe, is out of contract in the summer and could leave Doncaster for nothing.

Having been pushed down the pecking order since Dickov’s arrival, he is eager to prove himself at Championship level - and is set to be handed a chance to impress against Stevenage in the FA Cup today.

But his Rovers future may yet hinge on the outcome of contract talks with Richie Wellens, Dickov’s first choice attack-minded midfielder.

If Wellens agrees to extend his stay at Doncaster, Dickov will be more inclined to listen to offers for Syers as a way of generating funds for an out and out goalscorer.

In the meantime Syers will be keen to persuade Dickov that he could be the solution to Rovers’ goal drought which has seen them score just twice in the last six games.
