Football: Real league blow for Epworth

Real Canutes stopped Epworth FC’s recent run of winning results with a gutsy 2-0 victory in the Gainsborough & District Sunday League, writes Stephen Lilley.

Having lost once this season to Epworth, the win was certainly sweet for Real Canutes - both teams are in the final of the Sporting Club Cup.

In Division One MUSC made it a perfect 1st half of the season when they travelled to Retford to face Northern FC in their 10th league game of the season and a hard-fought 3-1 win made it a perfect 10.

Northern FC certainly did not make it easy for the league leaders and MUSC had to find all their resources to come out top in an excellent game.

Mattersey FC maintained their title hopes with a 3-1 home win over a Rose & Crown team that gave a very good account of themselves before running out of steam.

In Division Two, Liberal Branch moved back to the top of the table after a goal fest with their near neighbours Maltings Meercats - winning 6-4.

The appointed referee did not turn up for this game and this puts a club member from one or other of the clubs under great pressure when they have to referee the game.

Misterton United continued their promising start with an hard-fought home win against near neighbours Walkeringham (2-0).

Walkeringham cannot at present get their season up and going and despite no lack of effort they were unable to breach the Misterton United defence as two pieces of opportunism settled the game.

King & Miller who, because of their long run to the semi-final of the Notts Sunday Minor Cup, have fallen behind with their league fixtures showed just what a force they could yet be in this division with a 3-1 win at Olde Sun FC who are very unpredictable.

Real Canutes O30s kept up their title challenge with another hard-earned away win at Tuxford Working Men’s Club, 2-1.

There was never much to choose between the teams in this game and it was just the better finishing of the Canutes’ team that proved to be decisive.

In Division Three, Black Horse sprang something of a surprise when they defeated the leaders Kings Arms Reserves (Haxey) by the only goal of a tightly-contested match.

Notts Diagonals, who again because of their cup exploits are somewhat behind with their league fixtures, showed they will be one of the teams in contention for the divisional title after winning away at LRG Yates 7-3.

With a young attack-minded team, they are certainly a handful for any side in this division.

Sherwood Grove and Ropery Rangers, who have both struggled of late, had another game that turned into something of a goal fest. Sadly for Sherwood Grove it was Ropery who proved victorious in a 6-3 scoreline which keeps them bottom of the table at present and a welcome win for Rangers.

Horse & Jockey and Smiffys United shared six goals between them in a thrilling encounter.
