Longton was not a happy hunting ground for Scunthorpe RUFC’s first team who felt aggrieved with a number of refereeing decisions following a 24-10 loss.
The Greens went into the lead when Nick Syddall scored the visitors’ touchdown with Jake Goodison converting cleanly.
As the match continued, Scunthorpe contested some technical offences they felt were caused by Longton, however, these went unpunished as the away side held on to their early 7-0 lead.
Hosts Longton hit back through a penalty try, despite Scunthorpe’s protestations.
However, Scunthorpe nudged themselves back into the lead with a well-taken Goodison penalty for 10-7 to the Greens.
Longton later failed to level proceedings when they missed their kick as Scunthorpe kept hold of their slender lead.
Longton then tried to pin the Greens in their own half by using the blustery conditions to their advantage after the break, but a stoic Scunthorpe kept the home side at bay with some robust tackling.
Rewiti Vaimoso then received a yellow card for an offside offence and two minutes later a scrum went against Scunthorpe as the referee awarded a second penalty try - despite the travelling pack not quite sure why the decision was made. Longton took no second invite as they edged into the lead.
And, having tackled with every last bit of effort, the pressure soon told as Longton finished off with two unconverted tries.
