Doncaster Dons: Club announce Hull FC partnership

The Dons will tap into Hull FC’s fringe men next season after announcing a dual registration partnership with the Black and Whites.

That’s despite last season’s link-up with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats ending acrimoniously in an argument over player availability.

Departed Dons coach Tony Miller accused Wakefield’s Richard Agar of “wanting to pick the team for me” at the end of last season - an accusation Agar denied and described as a “cheap shot” at the Wildcats.

New player coach Paul Cooke will be hoping for a smoother partnership with Hull FC, one of his former clubs.

Dons general manager Carl Hall said: “We have been in detailed discussion with Hull FC regarding the partnership. Both clubs feel they have learnt a lesson from respective partnerships last season.

“We are thoroughly delighted to be partnering up with Hull FC. As we are the closest Championship club to Hull, we feel that it is a good fit for both parties.

“We think this partnership will be a great benefit to both clubs.”

The dual-registration system has caused controversy since its inception.

It was introduced following the abolition of the Super League Under 23s competition, with clubs encouraged to link-up with Championship clubs to give players not eligible to play in the Under 19s competition game time.

The top four sides in last season’s Championship chose not to utilise the system.

Doncaster and Hull will also face each other in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, January 12.
