Doncaster Rovers: Let’s not just be ‘coupon busters’, says Paul Quinn

Goal hero Paul Quinn says Doncaster Rovers must not become the Championship’s coupon busters.

Saturday’s memorable comeback win against Queens Park Rangers, sealed by Quinn’s first ever goal for the club, bailed Rovers out after their no-show at Charlton, according to the full back.

Now the straight-talking Scot wants to see the same level of performance week-in week-out regardless of the opposition - starting tonight at Birmingham.

Quinn said: “We’re on our game most when the better sides come here. We’re more comfortable. But we need to change that.

“There’s no point sitting here once every three or four weeks and saying ‘good point’, ‘good win’, ‘surprise win’ ‘coupon buster’, whichever way you want to put it.

“We need to do the basics every game.

“Saturday was a bonus but we need to show that sort of performance and attitude from the beginning in every game.

“To be fair we have done that in most games but we let the club, the fans and ourselves down at Charlton. That performance was unlike us.

“On Saturday it was about performance and attitude first - to eradicate the mistakes we made at Charlton and how disjointed we were.

“We have to hold our hands up and say, myself included, we weren’t at the races at the Valley - all over the pitch.

“But we got back to basics in training and we knew we’d be hard to beat. We all stuck to our jobs on Saturday and that made the difference.

“QPR are the best team in this division by a country mile so the result is testament to the lads,” he added.

“But we need to forget that result now. That result has only bailed us out of last Tuesday.

“We need to make sure we take the positive things from the performance - the fact we worked so hard to close them down and we pressed them in the right areas - and take that into Birmingham.

“We have to forget the result, but remember how we got the result and do the same things again.”

Quinn also elaborated on boss Paul Dickov’s half time team-talk; asking his players to dig Ross Turnbull out of the mire after the goalkeeper’s error gifted Charlie Austin his ninth goal of the season.

“The gaffer laid it on us at half time, saying Ross had bailed us out a few times this season,” said Quinn.

“And he has. He’s been our best player this season in my opinion.

“Thankfully we managed to turn it round and I was buzzing that I managed to get the goal, and buzzing for Ross as well.

“He’s made a few saves after a couple of my mistakes this season so it’s good to help each other out.

“It was good to get my first goal for Doncaster,” he added.

“We’re lacking a bit of height with Browny out of the team so I’ve been encouraged to get up there. It was a great ball in and I was just happy to get on the end of it.”

Rovers’ last win at Birmingham came in 1954. They have lost on their last five visits to the Blues.
