Rovers are currently missing nine players through injury and suspension.
For hosts Charlton, Yan Kermorgant returned to the starting XI in place of Bradley Pritchard.
Rovers went behind six minutes before half-time. Dale Stephens pounced for the home side with what must be one of the goals of the season in the Championship, firing in with a 30 yard volley.
Macheda shot over as Rovers looked to get level.
It got worse for Rovers on the hour mark when Simon Church made it 2-0 to Charlton.
