Doncaster Rovers: Rovers respond to Dickov’s question

Paul Dickov had a rather blunt question for his team at half-time against Yeovil: “What’s wrong with you?”

The Rovers boss was delighted with Friday night’s win against the Glovers but equally concerned at how his team fizzled out during the first half, despite taking an early lead through Dean Furman.

Dickov said: “At half-time I just asked them what was wrong with them.

“It looked as if they really enjoyed playing in the first half of the first half.

“And then in the second half of the first half it looked like they weren’t enjoying passing the ball.

“We just told them to up it and, rather than playing as individuals, let’s get back to being a team.

“That’s when we’re at our best.”

Yeovil levelled through former Doncaster defender Byron Webster on the stroke of half-time before Mark Duffy’s late free-kick earned Rovers a precious three points.

“We stopped passing the ball in the right areas and it allowed them to get back into the game,” said Dickov.

“It was disappointing to concede a goal from a set-piece, which is something we work on.

“But in the second half I thought we really rolled up our sleeves and dug in.

“The players have got to be given a lot of credit because when you go down to ten men at 1-1 the tendency is to sit back and take a point.”

Dickov also heaped praise on man of the match Duffy.

“When he first came to us, he was taking too many touches and doing too many silly things in dangerous areas,” he said.

“We spoke to him about doing a job for the team first and foremost without the ball.

“In the middle third, play as much one and two touch stuff as possible. And, like all the players, when they get it in the final third they can shove it up their backside as far as I’m concerned as long as they’re being positive.”
