Doncaster Rovers: Griffin not in Dickov’s plans

Andy Griffin has been told that he does not have a future at Doncaster Rovers.

The 34-year-old defender provided more than useful cover at both full back positions last season and was one of nine players told by the club in May to expect a new deal.

However, following Paul Dickov’s arrival, Griffin was informed that he does not figure in the new manager’s plans.

Dickov though has allowed Griffin to continue to train with Doncaster this summer in a bid to help the former Newcastle and Stoke man find a new club.

“Previous to me coming in Andy was offered a contract, albeit it didn’t get down to talking terms or figures, or anything like that,” said Dickov.

“Andy’s a top professional. We want to try and look after him.

“With Quinny and Reece [Wabara] here, his chances are going to be limited.

“As a senior pro I have to show him respect and let him know he’s not going to be in my plans.

“At the same time you’ve got to treat him correctly.

“As a club we want to be respectful,” he added.

“And as a manager I like to think I’m respectful to the players as well.”

Griffin joined Doncaster on non-contract terms last October, making 18 appearances before a hamstring injury brought his season to a premature end.
